The Octo Finissimo Minute Repeater lays the foundations of a new approach to mechanics and to classic complications while extending Bulgari’s line of ultra-thin watches. With this timepiece the watch manufacturer also preserves its status and cultivates watchmaking traditions by combining extreme slenderness with one of the most elaborate horological complications.



A striking watch implies a number of specific construction constraints and full command of certain distinctive skills in order to achieve the best possible outcome: an intense, crystal-clear chime with a perfectly uniform and regular cadence when the mechanism is activated. The aim was to achieve the perfect sound within the smallest possible space. Therefore, it had to made from titanium: in addition to its appreciable lightness, the properties of this low-density metal ensure the best possible sound diffusion.



The circular-section gongs directly affixed to the case are individually fashioned and finished by hand throughout the production process, which involves many separate stages, as are the two hammers. The pusher activating the striking mechanism is positioned on the case middle at 9 o’clock. It is designed to guarantee continuous water resistance to 50 m.
The in-house developed and produced BVL Calibre 362 measures just 3.12 mm thick and the overall case thickness amounts to only 6.85 mm. It is hand-wound and delivers a 42-hour power reserve once fully wound.

The hour-markers on the dial – made from titanium like the case – feature an incised, cut-out design, as too does the small seconds counter at 6 o’clock: the openings serve to amplify resonance inside the case and thereby optimise the sound effect.

The Bulgari Octo Finissimo Minute Repeater embodies a paradigm shift in terms of slenderness and lays the foundations of a new approach to mechanics and to classic complications, all the while preserving and cultivating watchmaking traditions.

A Brief History of Military Watches

Military watches, as their name suggests, were developed for use in the armed forces. The first military watches were naval pieces, chronometers that worked well for their purposes, but as other branches of the military – aviation in particular – made major technological advances around the time of the Second World War, precise seconds became critical. As the saying goes, “necessity is the mother of invention,” and Navigator (also known as “Pilot”) watches were born.

In Navigator watch design, the second’s bezel allowed the pilot to synchronize the seconds hand with correct reference time before takeoff, and to make manual corrections to radio time signals while in flight, thus eliminating any “chronometer error” and the navigational errors that could result.

Great War, Great Technological Advances

Seconds continued to be of the essence in both military technology and military watches. “Center-seconds” hands, (also called a “hack seconds feature”) – the feature that allowed for synchronization between two timepieces – continued to improve and advance.

The definitive Navigator “hack” watches feature a black dial and white Arabic numerals and indices, hour, minute, and center-seconds hands. Sizing is all over the board; historically, such notable companies as Elgin, Waltham, and Bulova Watches crafted watches (for the renamed Army Air Force in 1941), as small as 31mm in diameter. The German army tended toward larger faces, often in the 55mm range. These watches were worn on the outside of a flight jacket or on the navigator’s thigh. The Germans also added antimagnetic protection to their chronometers.

Within another major Axis power, Seiko produced a staggering number of military watches for the Japanese Imperial Army and Navy. These watches averaged around 49mm in diameter.

Navigating the Cold War

As the days of WWII faded into memory and the strained peace of the “Cold War” became reality, military budgets and military technology boomed. In the era of nuclear bombs the airplane ascended to its most powerful military and political role in history. Watchmakers rose to the call by designing an instrument worthy of going into battle with humankind’s most powerful weapon. Those were the Glory Days of the military watch, although no one design house can claim full credit for the strides made in the industry during that time.

Cold War-era military watches were much larger in size than the average American navigators before them. Averaging 36mm in diameter, the crafting of these timepieces was moved to Switzerland and Swiss military watch companies with centuries’ old reputations for precision. Like those before them, these Navigators also featured a matte black dial marked with white Arabic numerals 1-12, and with white indices. The new designs did not have white numerals at cardinal 3, 6, 9, and 12. Another new addition was a shatterproof Perspex acrylic crystal, which protected its large 12 ligne movement from magnetic fields. These hand-wound watches were expected to be water-resistant to 20 feet, including water-resistance under low-pressure at operational altitudes.

Why and When Should You Service Your Fine Watch?

Just like a good car, fine watches need maintenance. The extent of this service depends on the timepiece, its movement and its age. A mechanical watch should be serviced every three to five years by a retailer authorized by a particular brand to work on that brand’s timepieces. (Certain extremely high-end, complicated luxury watches that utilize silicium or other high-tech materials in their movements to reduce friction need servicing less frequently.)

Servicing of a mechanical watch — especially a vintage or a complicated watch — is not just a simple oil change as it would be with a car. It is a thorough inspection wherein the watchmaker takes the case backs off of the watch, inspects the oils and lubricants and re-oils, if necessary. He or she also checks the gears, the teeth, the wheels and the crown. The crystal is inspected for scratches, and the case, as well. It is a complex process that takes time, precision and a meticulous eye.



Often, the retailer’s on-premise watchmakers have trained with the individual brands the store sells so that they are well versed on the brand’s movements. Sometimes these training sessions take place at U.S.-based service centers, and other times watchmakers travel to Switzerland for training. Utilizing an authorized retailer ensures not only proper parts and servicing, but also expert care. Additionally, sometimes the retailer will send the watch back to the brand if servicing is more complex. This requires time and owner patience.

Remember, letting a watch go too long without service can result in more expensive repair issues down the road.

Time and History: Labor Day Celebrates the Contributions of American Workers

Labor Day seems like a great day to reflect on time and history. With America’s Department of Labor now just over 100 years old, we celebrate the fact that Labor Day is fully American. The first governmental recognition of American workers came through municipal ordinances passed during 1885 and 1886, when a movement started designed to secure state laws honoring the work force. While the first state bill introduced into legislature happened in New York, Oregon was the first to pass the law in February of 1887. Within a year, four more states (New York, New Jersey, Colorado and Massachusetts) followed suit. By June of 1894, Congress passed an act making the first Monday of September a legal holiday to celebrate workers.



It that same timeframe, the U.S. Department of Labor implemented a system for clocking the hours worked and for not exploiting that time. On April 29, we wrote about how the time clock industrialized working hours in a preview of the National Watch and Clock Museum's exhibit called "On the Clock: Changing the Industrialized World." The exhibit will run until the end of December 2015. The article is in our April 2015 archives.

It a rotten situation, and NPEs aren the only culprit. Apple recently convinced a judge to ban sales of Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 tablets in the US based on the accusation that Samsung copied look and feel of its iPad and iPhone devices. Moreover, the ever present threat of patent infringing lawsuits has companies spending time and resources building up patent portfolios for the sole purpose of erecting legal shields, money that could otherwise be spent on innovation.

Some companies are even looking to change the way they do business altogether. The most recent example is Qualcomm, which just announced a corporate restructuring to protect its patents. Qualcomm created a whollyowned subsidiary, known as Qualcomm Technologies Inc. (QTI), which will handle product development for the company chip business, while the existing parent company will hold onto most of the patents. Why?

According to Foss Patents, Qualcomm understands that patents are the crown jewels of the company and things can get sticky as it heads into open source territory, but it also shows how far companies are willing to go to shield themselves from patent lawsuits.

Necessity is supposed to be the mother of invention, but as long as companies like Apple are able to broadly patent wedgeshaped notebook designs and sue competing products right off of store shelves, the real need is for patent reform.

Also, to your point. The stock trader who copied code from his employer and reused it. He won the (Defence) case for both patent infringement and theft. Not that it would work in every situation, but when it comes to courts, judges do place limits and invalidate some unreasonable patent demands especially certain types of software code. Some, but not enough.

Suits by NPE is lamentable, however this is a lead in to main your point that Apple is suing Samsung for blatent copying of its products. Would it be better to let these products sell to consumers, who would be disapointed by the software and lack of a working ecosystem?

Where do you draw the line? Can Apple sue anybody who sells a product with hardware to their own products? Well, I guess it time for Apple to sue anybody who dares sell any type of computer. If selling your product in a similar box to a competitor is grounds for litigation, why isn literally everybody in every industry suing everybody else over the same issue? jerks are selling their product in a square cardboard box which is fitted to the size of the product contained within! We do, too! This is damaging our image! Nonsense. This whole case is ridiculous. Apple is deliberately stifling competition here, and all it does is hurt us, the consumers, like you and me (and yes, even if you will never purchase a Galaxy SIII, you still being hurt because of the reduction in competition, which encourages innovation and lowers price across the entire industry). The coexistence of the SIII and the iPhone would be more symbiotic than it would ever be parasitic, so color me perplexed to see you cheering Apple on. I will never understand brand loyalty. It just makes no damned sense. You have a great deal to learn about patent law, as do most people commenting on this article. First of all the and feel of a product means everything when it concerns a design patent. Which I am assuming is the grounds upon which Apple brought this law suit. This is not a utility patent like the you were probably thinking of in your comment above. It is not what the invention does or how it does it, but the and feel of the invention. Another point to bring up is that the American Invents Act which was passed and will take hold in the coming year is going to significantly lower the amount patent litigation as a whole. Thirdly, Apple has a bunch of patents, utility and design, for the products you have listed above. Apple has a ton of patents on glass in particular, including different processes, curved glass, the glass staircase in the New York store, the connections to hold the giant glass pieces has been extremely innovative and should be rewarded for there innovation. In this case they have with intellectual property rights. They have every right to defend their intellectual property, not doing so not only hurts our economy, but all economies that rely heavily on intellectual property. Additionally, this litigation may have a slight initial cost on the economy, but remember that apple is one of the driving forces of our economy and put billions upon billions into it every year.

Die Nixon Fidelity ist eine LCD-Uhr, eine kleinere Version der Nixon-Block-Uhr. Es hat ein quadratisches Plastikgehäuse mit Kanten, die vom Glas abfallen. Das inverse LCD hat 3 Zeilen, wobei die mittlere Zeile die Hälfte der Displayhöhe einnimmt. Die oberste Zeile umfasst Tag und Datum und dient zum Anzeigen von Buchstaben. Außerdem wird der Name des Modus angezeigt, wenn Sie die Modi wechseln, während die unterste Zeile nur die Sekunden abdeckt. Die Modellnummer für die Uhr scheint A565 zu sein und ich habe eine Web-Rezension aus dem Jahr 2009 gesehen, also würde ich vermuten, dass dies bei der Veröffentlichung der Fall ist.

Freestyle Shark - Tigerhai

Die heutige Uhr ist eine weitere aus der Shark-Uhrenreihe der amerikanischen Marke Freestyle USA. Dieses Mal heißt die Uhr Tigershark und hat eine andere Form als die anderen Shark Uhren, die ich gebloggt habe.

Das Tigershark-Modell ist ein LCD-Modell, aber mit einem ungewöhnlich runden Design. Das Gehäuse ist in erster Linie aus Kunststoff, hat aber eine Metallplatte, die es solider als die normalen Vollkunststoff-Designs aussehen lässt. Für das LCD hat es ein zweizeiliges Design mit Tag und Datum oben und Zeit (6 Ziffern mit kleineren Sekunden) in der unteren Zeile. Das LCD hat eine el-Hintergrundbeleuchtung, und wenn es gedrückt wird, ist ein sehr sichtbares Shark Logo in rot auf dem Display. Dieses Modell verfügt über die normalen Modi für eine Sportuhr, mit Stoppuhr, Alarm (Multi), Timer und Dual-Time-Optionen. Alle Modi werden tatsächlich entlang der obersten Zeile angezeigt, wobei die untere Zeit für die normale Zeit übrig bleibt, was ungewöhnlich ist, da diese normalerweise vertauscht wird.

Die Rückseite hat das Logo und den Namen des Freestyle Shark, zusammen mit der Aussage 'performance timing'. Die Rückseite stellt auch fest, dass dieses in Kalifornien entworfen wurde, aber gebildet in China.

Ich habe mich für dieses Modell online umgeschaut, und es scheint, dass dies nicht eines der Modelle ist, die gerade verkauft werden, also würde ich vermuten, dass es ein älteres Modell war. Für mich scheint das Design mit den Stilen aus den 90ern übereinzustimmen, so dass es vielleicht so alt ist (aber es gibt keine Hinweise auf der Uhr, wann es tatsächlich veröffentlicht wurde).
